The Beginning of GUMSB at the Red Campus

20 Oct, 2024

Competing to earn rewards by participating in religious studies is indeed beneficial when done regularly, as it can bring a person closer to the Almighty and also increase the enthusiasm for frequently reading and studying the Qur'an.

Someone who makes the Qur'an their guide in life can find guidance to always be on the path of goodness for the safety of this world and the hereafter.

Amidst the busy campus activities, religious studies are seen as a good effort to ensure that an individual not only becomes an intellectual person but also a faithful one.

Reflecting on the identity news of Unhas in early February 2017, the movement Gerakan Unhas Mengaji dan Salat Berjamaah (GUMSB) was initially initiated by Hasanuddin University (Unhas) in collaboration with the Indonesian Campus Mosque Association (AMKI) with the hope that Unhas students could develop their spiritual intelligence and become learned individuals both physically and spiritually.

The purpose of GUMSB is closely related to several MARITIM values of Unhas, namely integrity, which expects students to grow into honest, responsible, and steadfast generations. Additionally, the value of religiosity, which emphasizes obedience and the relationship between oneself and God, as well as relationships with fellow human beings, is also connected to the implementation of GUMSB.

At that time, all Unhas students were encouraged to participate in GUMSB. For Bidikmisi students, participation in this activity was mandatory to assess their engagement in Unhas student activities. This idea originated from the Vice Rector III and was announced by Ehsan from the Student Welfare Division of Unhas on Monday, January 30, 2017.

GUMSB activities began to gain momentum during the tenure of Prof. Dr. Dwia Aries Tina Pulubuhu MA as the Rector of Unhas. Ehsan stated that Unhas had previously focused only on educating students for worldly needs.

"This program is a form of heartfelt responsibility and brings students closer to Allah SWT," he said.

Initially, GUMSB was held regularly for all members of the Unhas academic community every semester, occurring twice a month on Wednesdays. The GUMSB activities started at 16:30 WITA and were conducted simultaneously at two different locations: Ikhtiar Mosque at Tamalanrea Campus and Harun Al-Rasyid Mosque at Gowa Campus (currently held at Al-Ilmi Mosque of Unhas Engineering Alumni).

When the Covid-19 pandemic struck the world and halted all campus activities, GUMSB activities were briefly shifted to online sessions, but this did not last long. As the pandemic subsided, campus activities gradually resumed, and GUMSB was held in a hybrid format before eventually returning to in-person sessions as in previous years.

For the past two years, GUMSB activities have been moved to Thursdays at the same time. However, during the month of Ramadan, GUMSB is held on Mondays and Thursdays from 15:30 until completion, alternating across all faculties at Unhas and broadcast live on the Hasanuddin University YouTube channel as well as Zoom Meeting. As a result, GUMSB activities can be attended both in person and online.

The afternoon prayer in congregation opens the series of GUMSB activities, followed by the recitation of the Divine Word and Sari Tilawah, which is usually read by one of the Unhas students. After the tilawah recitation, an Islamic lecture or study is delivered by a religious leader, concluding with a question-and-answer session between participants and the speaker.

The Rector of Unhas, Prof. Dr. Ir Jamaluddin Jompa MSc, stated during the opening of GUMSB in 2023 that the program, which has been running for seven years, shows that Unhas is not only striving to strengthen intellectual intelligence but also to cultivate the emotional development of students.

GUMSB is expected to serve as a gateway to draw closer to God through the Holy Qur'an. This program also responds to counter various extremist and terrorist ideologies that pose threats to community security. By getting closer to the Almighty, there is a greater opportunity to shield oneself from negative behaviors and to cultivate noble character.
